Summer Educator Academy
This comprehensive, intensive and energizing training provides teachers with the tools, resources, and strategies they can use to help build the professional capacity of their unions, lift educators' voices, and advocate for what they know is needed to meet the challenges they face in their classrooms every day.
The AFT collaborates with leading education researchers to synthesize and apply research-validated best practices. Classroom-based activities help participants connect the research findings to their daily work, including small group interaction, role-playing, case studies, simulations, Socratic seminars and shared reflection.
Newly trained trainers then collaborate with their respective local school districts to create and deliver peer-led professional learning opportunities. For example, Palm Beach County School District and the Toledo Federation of Teachers require Foundations of Effective Teaching for all new hires.
During this 10-day experience, new relationships are forged, the passion for ongoing learning is shared, and a stronger understanding of the value of union-led and delivered professional development is developed.
